In the United States, spas that combine relaxation with medical treatment are receiving a lot of attention. A 40-minute drive to the North West from central New York, in Paramus, New Jersey, the Beaura Spa opened in July of 2005. At this spa, aside from more standard offerings of aromatherapy massages and anti-aging facial treatments, you can also receive medical procedures such as Botox ® Cosmetic injections.

"Demand for Botox ® Cosmetic is growing rapidly," says plastic surgeon Paul Parker. According to Dr. Parker, there is a division between procedures such as Botox ® Cosmetic injections or peeling treatments (which chemically remove the keratin from the surface of the skin) and conventional, invasive plastic surgery operations. That's one of the reasons that demand over the last three years has risen.

At the Beaura Spa, clients begin with treatments for relaxation. After that, they have a consultation with a therapist or plastic surgeon to decide whether to undergo plastic surgery. Dr. Parker regularly gathers groups of people who have never undergone treatment before for classes that he calls "Botox ® Cosmetic Party."

By comparison to "relaxation spas," this kind of mixed service is rare. According to the American Day Spa Association, they make up less than 10% of all spas. But ADSA representative Hanna Ruby believes that because "women expect fast results, this type of spa will become more popular."
